  The two-slit experiment
arrowright1a2
   by Giorgio

0. Introduction

The purpose of the following pages is to describe what happens when in the two slit experiments we utilize:

1) material particles (such as tennis balls)

2) waves on water

3) light

4) electrons

apparatoall

On the left: scheme of the equipment to be used for the (thought ) 2-slit experiment.

The device is composed by:

1) a source emitting, depending on the choices outlined above, little balls, waves, light or electrons

2) a screen in which two vertical long and narrow slits have been cut

3) another screen placed behind the slits (detector) meant to intercept, according to the type of experiment, balls, waves, light, or electrons coming through them.

The device just described is our experimental setup.

In this section our purpose is to understand the fundamental concepts hidden behind the two-slit experiment. In order to avoid being engrossed with technical details we shall describe it as a thought experiment. The equipment then will be represented invariably by the same basic scheme reported above. One should, however, consider, that this is only a symbolic representation of a true experimantal equipment. The true equipment, actually, would show great differences (in dimension, shape, building materials, complexity) depending on whether it would be used to monitor balls, waves on water, light or electrons.

In order to know the details of the experimental device actually utilized in the electron interference experiment by Merli, Missiroli and Pozzi, you are advised to consult the backstage section of the site. But for the time being you may forget about such details, since they are not needed to understand the meaning of the experiment.

We now are ready to start with the presentation, and shall begin with the simplest and most intuitive case, that of tennis balls.
